It’s 1pm on New Year’s Eve and all the chatter online is about settings goals for the new year. Before you start making your list of grand resolutions that will transform your world, consider skipping out on the tradition this time around.
Why now?
Yes, the idea of a clean slate for the new year is super sexy (amiright?!). But along with this fresh start on a calendar comes a whole lot of pressure. If you set a resolution and it doesn’t happen magically like your vision board says it will, does that mean your whole year is doomed?! If you can’t make it happen in January, is the whole year a bust and you have to wait until the next new year? Hell, no!
There is nothing stopping you from setting a new goal or creating a shift for yourself on a random Thursday. Or Monday, Or Wednesday morning. Or Any. Damn. Day.
And yes, the new year resolution that we see on our modern day calendar is just another day - so why not start then, right?
Because whether we admit it or not, it brings extra weight and pressure with it. We buy into the hype and have that little voice in our head that says “I know it’s just another day, but…. how amazing would it be if this is MY YEAR!”
A new perspective.
So here’s a better plan.
Plan on making changes that make sense with your business’s (or life’s) cycle. Is there a down time of the year for your business? That’s a great time to change up your rate structure and tighten up your project policies. Is there a time of year that has no birthdays, no big events, and is typically calm in your house? That’s perfect for moving forward with the kitchen remodel you’ve dreamed of for years.
And on New Year’s Eve?
Go ahead and drink champagne, eat your 12 grapes or raisins, count down to midnight, and celebrate with no pressure! Know that the next day is just that - the next day. And you’ll have the possibility of a new start 364 more times that year.
