I have four.
Three are virtual, one is in-person.
One is a photographer,
one is a marketer,
one is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt advisor,
and one is an architect.
Mentors can make a huge difference in your business and personal life. And here's the crazy part - they don't even have to know that they're your mentor! You can have someone in your life that plays the role of mentor merely by the information they put out into the world. Or someone can be a mentor because they lead by example and show you that you can do it too.
So who are your mentors?
Who is leading you by example?
Or by messages they put out into the world?
Or by one-on-one sessions?
Chances are, you already have at least one person who you see as a mentor, even if you’ve never met them! Take a few moments to think about your current mentors and the impact they have on your life and business. Do you turn to their books for inspiration or resources? Or maybe their weekly emails keep you motivated in your business. Or maybe the coffee dates with them several times a year are a good chance to take stock of your progress.
Not sure where to find your mentors?
Start by looking at the media you're consuming. Who are the people that you go back to time and time again when they publish a new book, post, or video?
Who do you turn to in real life when you need to talk business? If there's someone that you turn to when you're looking for clarity, they're most likely fulfilling the role of a mentor for you in some capacity.
You can't force a mentorship. It needs to be with someone that you have a connection to. Whether you connect with their tone, approach, or goals, it just needs to feel strong and organic. So yes, some mentors you just have to wait until they come into your life.
So when you find someone that you want to have as a mentor, what do you do? You build that relationship.
If they offer some sort of mentorship package, you invest in having access to them and their expertise.
If they’re open to just getting together for coffee and having a casual professional relationship, then you initiate it (be sure that you’re bringing something to the table too, though! If you’re not paying them for their time, the relationship needs to be balanced).
