Social media is inevitable.
And chances are that, as a photographer, you're focused on Instagram as your main social media outlet. I don't blame you, I love me some IG!
There's a difference, though, between using it for fun and using it as a business. You can find lots of information online about tips and hacks and all that, but I want to share my TOP THREE pieces of advice for using IG to grow your business.
1. Consistency rules
What good is defining your branding and target audience if you can't keep people interested? Posting consistently, both in timing and in branding, does a few things for you:
- People are crystal clear on your brand and what you offer
- You create a deeper connection with your audience
- You become memorable
By being consistent in your branding, voice, and look, you're making it very clear to your audience who you are and what you do. There's no confusion about it because nothing is changing. Can this get boring for you sometimes? Maybe. But to your audience, you become a familiar brand they can recognize.
Building up that brand recognition and popping up in feeds on a regular basis also gives comfort to your audience. They know they can count on you, and that helps them to connect with you more. They come to expect you on their feed!
Finally, you become memorable. This is simple psychology - the more someone sees or hears something, they more they remember (and like) it! Does this mean you should be posting five times a day? NO - that will just drive people away by annoying them. Instead, just keep giving your clear messaging on a consistent basis. Next time they need an interior photographer, they'll instantly think of you!
2. Offer value. Always
It's easy to fall into the trap of always giving sales pitches. "This kitchen is gorgeous! I can do the same for your projects!!"
But just like those pesky telemarketer calls we all get, constant sales pitches on social media are a big turn-off.
Instead, offer consistent value in the form of beautiful sample images, tips for styling, DIY photo tips for their designs, or behind-the-scenes peeks to how a photoshoot works. Unless you're doing a big promotion of some sort, it's best to steer clear of direct sales pitches.
3. Be genuine in your interactions
This one should go without saying, but sadly, it needs to be said. Having interactions on IG is crucial to getting noticed, but don't just leave an emoji in the comments and call it a day.
Instead, comment on the incredible light fixture, the dramatic transformation, or ask where they got that rug from. Get specific and comment on something that you truly believe and feel. Trust me, it makes a difference!
Finally, before you post ANYTHING on social media for your business, be sure to ask yourself these 3 questions to make sure it’s a good fit. It’s a quick way to check yourself before hitting that “Share” button.
So there you have it. Are you using IG in the best way possible for your business? I hope these tips help!

One last tip!
It may sound simple, but make sure that you're connecting and interacting with your ideal CLIENT. As photographers on Instagram, we tend to follow other photographers. But you're looking to connect with designers!
So audit your "Following" list and make sure that you're following plenty of your ideal clients. Then take a peek at some of their profiles and add a few (genuine) comments in for kicks.
